Bremsventil

Bremsventil, or brake valve, is a valve assembly in braking systems that modulates the pressure delivered to brake actuators. In automotive hydraulic brakes, the term is often applied to the valve inside the master cylinder or linked with the pedal to produce proportional braking pressure. In pneumatic (air) braking systems used on trucks and trains, the Bremsventil controls brake pipe pressure and the release of air to the brake cylinders, enabling service, emergency and parking braking.

Design and operation: A brake valve typically comprises a housing with internal chambers, pistons or diaphragms, springs and channels. It interprets driver input (pedal travel or lever position) and converts it into a brake-pressure signal. Some units are purely mechanical; others are fully electronic or electro-pneumatic, and may be integrated with ABS or other safety systems. In hydraulic systems, the valve regulates fluid pressure to wheel cylinders or calipers; in pneumatic systems, it regulates air pressure from reservoirs to the brake cylinders.

Types: service brake valves, emergency brake valves, parking/hand brake valves, and combination valves. In railway applications, automatic brake valves and equalizing valves are common.

Maintenance and safety: Bremsventile require clean fluids or air, proper seals and regular inspection. Common failure modes include leaks, contamination, or stickiness from dirt, leading to reduced braking performance or unintended brake application.
