Basketweaving, or basketry, is the craft of weaving pliable plant fibers into baskets and related containers. The process typically uses a set of rigid spokes or stakes around which flexible weavers are woven in regular patterns, creating hollow objects with structural strength. Baskets vary widely in shape, size, and decorative complexity, from simple utilitarian containers to intricate art pieces.

Materials commonly used include natural fibers such as willow, reed, cane, bamboo, rattan, grasses, palm fibers, and conifer bark, as well as synthetic fibers and textiles. Processing often involves harvesting, drying or soaking to increase pliability, and cutting to length. Techniques include plaiting, weaving around a frame, and coiling, with patterns produced by varying the interlacing of weavers and spokes. Finishing touches may include a rim, handles, and a lid or lining for protection and function.

History and cultural role: basket weaving is an ancient craft found in many regions around the world. It has served practical purposes—storage, transport, cooking, and food preparation—and also holds ceremonial, social, and artistic significance in some cultures. Local materials and techniques have given rise to a wide range of regional styles.

Care for baskets typically involves keeping them dry or only lightly damp, avoiding prolonged exposure to sun and moisture to prevent cracking or mold, and cleaning with a soft brush or cloth.
