Baskets

A basket is a container woven from flexible fibers, straw, or other pliable materials. Baskets are created by interlacing materials to form hollow vessels with an open top. They are among humanity’s oldest crafts and have been produced by countless cultures worldwide for storage, transport, and domestic use.

Common materials include willow, reed, rattan, cane, grasses, palm, straw, and, in modern times, plastics and wire. Construction methods include wicker (over-and-under weaving around spokes), twining (two or more strands twisted together), coiling (spiraling stitches), and plaiting. Shapes vary from round to rectangular, with or without handles.

Uses range from market baskets and harvest containers to laundry baskets, fruit bowls, drying racks, and decorative pieces. Some traditions feature distinctive regional styles or motifs, reflecting local plants and techniques.

Care and preservation: natural-fiber baskets should be kept dry and out of direct sun to prevent drying and fading. Clean with a soft brush or cloth; avoid soaking. If mold forms, air and dry fully, then gently clean. Storage in a cool, ventilated place helps maintain shape.
