Annotierungs

Annotierungs, or annotation, is the practice of adding notes, labels, or metadata to data or content to reveal structure, meaning, or context. It supports interpretation, discovery, and machine learning by turning unstructured material into annotated resources. In German usage, Annotierungs denotes this broad activity; in English, annotation is the common term. The scope spans textual annotation (such as parts of speech, named entities), image and video annotation (bounding boxes, segmentation), and audio annotation (transcripts, speaker labels), as well as metadata tagging in software and digital documents.

Annotation can be performed manually by human experts, automatically by algorithms, or through hybrid workflows. A key concern is inter-annotator agreement and reproducibility, often measured to assess labeling consistency. Guidelines define labeling schemes and levels of granularity, while pilot studies help calibrate annotators before large-scale labeling. Quality control, versioning, and provenance are important to maintain traceability of decisions.

Formats, standards, and tools vary by domain. Image datasets commonly use COCO or PASCAL VOC formats; text data may rely on TEI XML, JSON, or RDF-based schemas; biomedical and NLP projects use domain-specific tagging schemes such as BIO. Widely used annotation tools include Prodigy, Labelbox, Brat, CVAT, and VGG Image Annotator, which offer interfaces for manual labeling and workflow management.

Applications span training data for natural language processing, computer vision, and speech processing; creation of annotated corpora for linguistics and digital humanities; and enriched metadata for information retrieval. Challenges include ensuring data quality, addressing bias, protecting privacy, and sustaining clear documentation to support reproducibility.
