Aistihäiriöinä

Aistihäiriöinä, often translated as sensory processing disorder or sensory integration dysfunction, refers to a neurological condition where individuals have difficulty processing sensory information. This means their brains may not receive, organize, or respond to sensory input in a typical way. The seven senses involved are sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, movement (vestibular), and body position (proprioception).

Individuals with aistihäiriöinä can experience over-responsivity (hypersensitivity) or under-responsivity (hyposensitivity) to sensory stimuli. For example, a hypersensitive person might find loud noises overwhelming or certain textures unbearable, while a hyposensitive person might seek out intense sensory experiences or not notice pain. Some may also have difficulties with sensory discrimination, distinguishing between similar stimuli, or motor skills that rely on sensory input.

The causes of aistihäiriöinä are not fully understood, but research suggests potential genetic and environmental factors. It is often observed in conjunction with other conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and learning disabilities, though it can also occur independently.

Diagnosis typically involves a comprehensive evaluation by an occupational therapist trained in sensory integration. Treatment often focuses on occupational therapy interventions designed to help individuals better process and respond to sensory information. These therapies can include specific activities and environmental modifications to support the individual's sensory needs and improve their daily functioning and participation in life.
