Adhezívumok, commonly known as adhesives, are substances that bind surfaces together by creating a bond between them. They are classified into several main categories based on their chemical composition and mode of action: natural adhesives (e.g., animal glues, plant gums), synthetic adhesives (such as acrylics, epoxies, polyurethanes, and silanes), and hybrid or specialty adhesives that combine features of both natural and synthetic options. The selection of an adhesive depends on factors such as substrate material, environmental conditions, required strength, cure time, and cost.

Natural adhesives are often derived from proteins (e.g., hide glue), polysaccharides (e.g., arabic gum), or resins (e.g., pine resin). They are biodegradable and have been used historically in woodworking and historical artifact restoration. Synthetic adhesives offered improved performance and versatility. Epoxy adhesives, for instance, form strong covalent cross‑links when mixed with a hardener, making them ideal for engineering applications where high mechanical strength is crucial. Acrylic adhesives cure through a polymerization reaction triggered by light or heat, providing rapid bonding for packaging or electronics. Polyurethane adhesives form flexible bonds and are widely used in construction and automotive industries.

Adhesives work by penetrating the microscopic irregularities of surfaces, forming mechanical interlocks, and then establishing chemical or physical bonds through cross‑linking or lamination. The bond strength is assessed through standardized tests such as ASTM D1002 (lap shear) or ISO 4624. Proper surface preparation—cleaning, roughening, or applying primers—balances adhesive performance and longevity.

Legislative frameworks, such as the European REACH regulation, govern the composition and labeling of adhesives to protect consumer health and the environment. Recent research has focused on developing bio‑based adhesives with comparable performance to petroleum‑derived products, reducing environmental impact while maintaining industrial applicability.
