ASIC-based describes systems or components built around an application-specific integrated circuit designed to perform a particular task or set of tasks with optimized performance and power efficiency. Unlike general-purpose processors, an ASIC is tailored for a defined workload, which yields higher efficiency but reduced flexibility.

Design and production: Creating an ASIC involves a formal design flow from specification to implementation and verification, followed by tape-out and fabrication, usually at large non-recurring engineering costs. The process enables high performance and low power for the target workload but requires volume to amortize the investment. There are various levels of customization, including full-custom, semi-custom, and structured ASICs, and designers often reuse pre-designed IP blocks and standard interfaces.

Applications: ASICs are used in consumer electronics (power management, voice recognition), data centers and networking (packet processing, cryptographic acceleration), automotive and industrial systems, and specialized domains such as cryptocurrency mining (SHA-256, Scrypt) and AI inference accelerators. In crypto, ASICs dominate certain algorithms due to efficiency advantages but are specialized to one algorithm and a limited set of configurations.

Advantages and limitations: The main advantages are high performance, low latency, and energy efficiency for the targeted workload, enabling smaller form factors and reduced running costs. Limitations include high upfront cost, long development cycles, rigid functionality, and risk of obsolescence if workloads shift or new algorithms emerge. ASIC supply and fabrication are also subject to manufacturing capacity, foundry economics, and geopolitical considerations.

Comparison: ASICs contrast with field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and general-purpose CPUs/GPUs, which offer reconfigurability and broader usability at the expense of peak efficiency.
