Ägglossning

Ägglossning, also known as ovulation, is a biological process that occurs in the female reproductive system. It is the release of a mature egg from one of the ovaries. This event is a crucial part of the menstrual cycle and is necessary for conception.

The process of egg release is typically triggered by hormonal changes, primarily a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH). This surge causes the dominant follicle in the ovary, which contains the egg, to rupture and release the egg. Once released, the egg travels into the fallopian tube, where it can potentially be fertilized by sperm. If fertilization does not occur within approximately 12 to 24 hours after ovulation, the egg will degenerate.

The timing of ovulation varies among individuals and can be influenced by factors such as stress, illness, and hormonal fluctuations. For many women, ovulation occurs roughly in the middle of their menstrual cycle, about 14 days before the start of their next period in a typical 28-day cycle. However, cycle lengths can vary, making precise timing unpredictable for some.

Some women may experience physical signs associated with ovulation, such as mild abdominal cramping (mittelschmerz), changes in cervical mucus consistency, or a slight increase in basal body temperature. Tracking these changes can help some individuals identify their fertile window. Understanding ovulation is important for both family planning, whether aiming for or avoiding pregnancy, and for general reproductive health awareness.
