Rupture is a general term for the act of breaking or tearing apart something that is normally held together. In medicine, rupture refers to tearing of tissue or an organ. Fracture mechanics studies how cracks initiate and propagate until a component can no longer bear load, leading to abrupt or progressive rupture.

In geology, rupture denotes a break along a fault or fracture surface that releases energy during earthquakes or creates a new path for magma. The size, slip, and duration of a rupture influence the magnitude and spatial pattern of ground shaking.

In social and economic contexts, rupture refers to a breakdown or severing of relationships, institutions, or agreements. A political rupture implies a fundamental change in governance or social order; economic rupture can describe abrupt disruptions to markets, supply chains, or social cohesion.
