Zwarcie, in Polish sometimes referred to by the plural form zwarciami, is the term used for a short circuit: an unintended low-resistance connection between conductors or between a conductor and a ground that creates a large, often dangerous, surge of current. In electrical engineering, a short circuit can involve different configurations, such as line-to-line, line-to-ground, line-to-neutral, or combinations in three-phase systems.

Causes of zwarciami include insulation deterioration, aging of cables or components, moisture or contaminants, mechanical damage, improper installation, and faults within equipment such as transformers or switches.
