Ylösnäppäin, known in English as the up arrow key, is a standard control found on computer keyboards, primarily used to move the cursor or selection upwards in various software interfaces. It is typically located in the directional arrow cluster that includes left, right, down, and sometimes the home, end, page up, and page down keys. On most PC keyboards, particularly those with a QWERTY layout, the ylösnäppäin is placed directly above the left shift key within a compact group of four arrows. The key is usually square-shaped with an upward-pointing arrowhead or sometimes an upward-pointing arrow on a diagonal or cross-shaped design.

When pressed, the ylösnäppäin often triggers horizontal scrolling or vertical navigation within a document, spreadsheet, or web page. In terminal emulators and command-line interfaces, it moves the highlighted line up one row, allowing users to review previous commands quickly. In games and graphical applications, it can control the movement of an on-screen object, defined by the program’s input handling logic.

Historically, arrow keys were first introduced on early computers and mainframes during the 1970s to aid text editing and control within text-based environments. Their inclusion became standardized with the IBM PC keyboard design in 1981, where the directional cluster occupied a dedicated four-key area. Many modern keyboards, including those on laptops and mobile devices, simulate the ylösnäppäin through multi-function keys, software overlays, or on-screen keyboards, especially when physical space is limited. The up arrow remains a fundamental yet understated component of interactive computing, facilitating efficient navigation across a wide variety of digital contexts.
