Vægge, the Danish word for walls, are vertical structures that enclose, divide, or support spaces in buildings. They form the boundary between interior and exterior environments, contribute to a building’s stability, and influence heat transfer, sound transmission, and privacy.

External walls serve as the primary weather barrier and load-bearing element in many buildings, while internal walls function as partitions or, in some cases, as additional structural support. Walls may also carry fixtures, doors, and windows, and they define room layouts and circulation.

Material choices affect moisture management, durability, and maintenance needs. Building codes and standards govern minimum requirements for safety, energy efficiency, and accessibility.

Maintenance issues for walls include cracks from settlement, dampness, mold, and salt efflorescence in masonry. Repairs may involve repointing bricks, replacing plaster, or installing improved insulation and damp-proofing layers. Proper detailing around openings and joints is essential to prevent water ingress and air leakage.

Historically, wall construction reflects regional materials and climate. In Denmark and much of northern Europe, brick, timber framing, and lime plasters have been common, while contemporary walls emphasize energy efficiency and performance through advanced insulation and airtight assemblies.
