Väsymisvaurioille, often translated as fatigue damage or stress fracture in English, refers to a type of injury that occurs in bone tissue due to repetitive stress. Unlike acute fractures that result from a single traumatic event, fatigue damage develops gradually over time as bone is subjected to repeated loads that exceed its ability to repair itself. This can happen in individuals who are physically active, particularly those involved in sports or occupations that demand prolonged weight-bearing activities.

The mechanism behind fatigue damage involves micro-damage accumulating in the bone. Normally, the body can repair these small cracks. However, when the stress is too frequent or too intense, the repair process cannot keep pace with the damage, leading to the formation of a stress fracture. Common sites for fatigue damage include the tibia (shinbone), metatarsals (bones in the foot), and femur (thighbone).

Symptoms of fatigue damage typically include localized pain that worsens with activity and improves with rest. Swelling and tenderness over the affected bone may also be present. Diagnosis is usually made through a combination of patient history, physical examination, and imaging techniques such as X-rays, bone scans, or MRI. Treatment primarily involves rest, activity modification, and pain management. In some cases, a cast or brace may be used to immobilize the area. Prevention strategies focus on gradual increases in activity levels, proper footwear, and adequate nutrition.
