This condition commonly affects athletes and individuals engaged in high-impact activities, though it can also occur in people with conditions like osteoporosis or those on certain medications that weaken bones.

The most frequent locations for stress fractures include the weight-bearing bones of the legs and feet, such as the tibia (shinbone), fibula, metatarsals, and navicular bone. Symptoms typically include localized pain that worsens with activity and improves with rest, swelling, and tenderness at the affected site. The pain may initially be mild but can progress to become severe enough to interfere with daily activities.

Diagnosis usually involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, and imaging studies. While X-rays may not always show a stress fracture in its early stages, they can help rule out other conditions. More sensitive imaging techniques like MRI or bone scans are often used to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment for stress fractures focuses on rest and reducing the stress on the injured bone. This often involves ceasing the activity that caused the fracture and sometimes using supportive devices like crutches or walking boots. Pain management may involve over-the-counter pain relievers. It is crucial to gradually return to activity only after the bone has fully healed to prevent re-injury. Prevention strategies include gradual increases in training intensity, proper footwear, a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, and cross-training to avoid repetitive strain.
