Vliesartige is a term used to describe materials whose structure or appearance resembles a nonwoven fabric, commonly known as Vlies in German. It refers to products that are either nonwoven fabrics or have a loose, fibrous, fleece-like texture rather than being woven or knitted.

Nonwoven fabrics are created by bonding a web of fibers without forming interlacing yarns. Bonding methods include mechanical processes (such as needle-punching), thermal bonding, chemical bonding, and hydraulic or spunlace methods. The resulting structure is typically characterized by high porosity, random fiber orientation, and variable density, which influence properties such as softness, drape, absorbency, and barrier performance.

Vliesartige materials often exhibit light weight, good loft, and strong moisture handling, making them suitable for applications requiring breathability and rapid liquid management. Their properties can be tailored by selecting fiber type, basis weight, bonding method, and final surface treatment. Common limitations include lower tensile strength in some directions and sensitivity to moisture in certain formulations, depending on the binder and fiber chemistry.

Typical applications span a wide range: hygiene products (diapers, wipes), medical textiles (drape and gown substrates), filtration media, insulation and sound absorption, geotextiles, automotive interiors, and protective clothing. In addition, technologies such as spunbond, meltblown, and spunlace are often described as nonwoven or vliesartig due to their fibrous, nonwoven-like structure, even though they may use different production processes.

Standards and testing for nonwovens cover properties such as tensile strength, tear resistance, elongation, absorbency, thickness, and air or liquid permeability, reflecting the broad use of vliesartige materials in technical and consumer applications.
