Veritulppariskiä, commonly translated as risk of blood clot, refers to the likelihood of a person developing a thrombosis. A thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot within a blood vessel, which can obstruct blood flow. These clots can form in either veins (venous thrombosis) or arteries (arterial thrombosis).

Several factors contribute to an increased veritulppariskiä. These include immobility, such as during long periods of sitting or lying down, which slows blood flow. Surgical procedures, especially those involving the legs or abdomen, can also elevate the risk. Certain medical conditions, like cancer, heart failure, inflammatory bowel disease, and inherited clotting disorders (thrombophilia), significantly increase susceptibility. Obesity and advanced age are also recognized risk factors.

Lifestyle choices play a role as well. Smoking impairs blood vessel function and promotes clot formation. Long periods of travel in confined spaces, like airplanes, are also associated with a higher risk. Hormonal factors, such as the use of estrogen-containing contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy, can also contribute to veritulppariskiä.

The consequences of a blood clot depend on its location. A clot in a leg vein, known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), can cause pain and swelling. If a fragment of this clot breaks off and travels to the lungs, it can cause a pulmonary embolism, a potentially life-threatening condition. Arterial clots can lead to strokes or heart attacks by blocking blood flow to the brain or heart, respectively. Identifying and managing these risk factors is crucial for prevention.
