Valgusimpulssideks, commonly referred to as valgus or knock knees, is a medical term describing a condition where the knees angle inward and touch or nearly touch when the legs are straightened. This inward angulation is more apparent when the individual stands with their feet and knees together. It is a common condition in young children, often resolving naturally as they grow. In adults, valgus impulses can persist or develop due to various factors and may lead to pain and functional limitations.

The causes of valgus impulses can be varied. In children, it is often a normal developmental phase. However, in older children and adults, it can be linked to genetic factors, obesity, certain medical conditions such as rickets, Blount's disease, or injuries to the knee or surrounding bones. The physical manifestation involves an abnormal alignment of the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone) at the knee joint, leading to increased stress on the medial side of the knee.

Symptoms associated with valgus impulses can range from mild to severe. Many young children experience no discomfort. However, in older individuals, symptoms may include knee pain, particularly on the inner side, instability of the knee, difficulty with physical activities like running or jumping, and a noticeable gait abnormality. Over time, the abnormal stress on the knee joint can contribute to osteoarthritis.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination by a healthcare professional, assessing the degree of angulation and observing the individual's gait. X-rays are often used to evaluate bone alignment and rule out other underlying conditions. Treatment approaches depend on the severity of the valgus impulses, the individual's age, and the presence of symptoms. For children with mild cases, observation and natural resolution are common. For persistent or symptomatic cases, conservative treatments like physical therapy, orthotics, and weight management may be recommended. In more severe or persistent cases, surgical intervention, such as osteotomy (bone realignment surgery), might be considered.
