Unusualness is the quality or degree to which something deviates from what is typical, expected, or normative within a given context. Because norms vary across cultures, situations, and domains, unusualness is inherently contextual rather than absolute. What is unusual in one setting may be ordinary in another, and small deviations can be perceived differently depending on observers' prior experiences and expectations.

In perception and cognition, unusualness often relates to novelty, surprise, and salience. Distinctive or unexpected items tend to attract attention and are more memorable, a phenomenon related to the von Restorff effect, where an item that stands out is more likely to be recalled. The sense of unusualness can be priced into information content: highly unexpected signals carry more informational value.

In practice, unusualness appears in many fields. In everyday life, it describes rare behavior or atypical objects; in art and design, it signals innovation and can increase aesthetic impact; in science and statistics, it aligns with the concept of outliers or rare events. In linguistics and communication, unusual phrasing or structure can affect comprehension or rhetorical effect. Quantifying unusualness often involves measuring deviation from a normative model, using statistics (z-scores, outlier detection), information-theoretic measures of surprise, or, in computational contexts, novelty or Kolmogorov complexity.
