tuviera

Tuviera is the imperfect subjunctive form of the Spanish verb tener. It corresponds to the first and third person singular forms, as in yo tuviera, tú tuvieras, él tuviera. The form is part of the imperfect subjunctive, used in subordinate clauses to express doubt, emotion, possibility, desire, or hypothetical situations in a past-reference frame or in present/future contexts viewed from a past perspective. There is also the variant tuviese, which belongs to the other (se) set of the imperfect subjunctive.

Formation and variation: tuviera is derived from the third person plural of the pretérito perfecto simple (tuvieron) with the typical imperfect-subjunctive endings -ra, -ras, -ra, -ramos, -rais, -ran. An alternative and equally correct version is tuviese (yo tuviese, tú tu viese, etc.), which uses the -se ending. Both forms are correct, with tu tuvo use often differing in regional or stylistic preference.

Usos: se emplea en cláusulas subordinadas que requieren el modo subjuntivo en contextos de duda, deseo, emoción, posibilidad o hipótesis, especialmente cuando el marco temporal es pasado o se aterriza en condiciones no realistas. En oraciones condicionales, la combinación de tuviera (imperfecto de subjuntivo) con el verbo de la segunda cláusula en conditional expresa hipótesis presente o futura respecto a un marco pasado: Si yo tuviera dinero, compraría una casa. También aparece tras expresiones como “no creía que tuviera…”, “ojalá tuviera…”.

Relación con otros tiempos: es distinto de hubiera, que forma parte del pretérito anterior. Tuviera/tuviese es preferible en circunstancias distintas a las de un tiempo verbal concreto y puede variar entre regiones y estilos.
