Sérv is the Hungarian term for hernia, a condition in which tissue or an organ protrudes through an opening or weakened area in the wall of the containing cavity. The protruding part is often fat or a section of intestine, but other structures can be involved. Hernias most commonly occur in the abdominal region and can appear in other parts of the body.

Common types include inguinal sérv (in the groin), femoral sérv, umbilical sérv (at the navel), and incisional sérv (through a surgical scar). Hiatal or diaphragmatic hernias, where part of the stomach herniates into the chest through the diaphragm, are also described within the broader category of hernias.

Symptoms vary. Many hernias present as a visible or palpable bulge that may be more noticeable with standing or physical activity and may disappear when lying down. Pain or discomfort, heaviness, or weakness at the site can occur, especially with lifting or straining. Some hernias are asymptomatic and discovered during routine exams or imaging. Complications include incarceration or strangulation, where the blood supply to the protruded tissue is compromised, causing severe pain, redness, and potential medical emergency.

Diagnosis typically relies on a physical examination aided by imaging such as ultrasound or CT/MRI when needed. Treatment ranges from watchful waiting for small, asymptomatic cases to surgical repair for most symptomatic or enlarging hernias. Procedures may be open or laparoscopic and often use mesh to reinforce the weakened area. Prevention focuses on managing risk factors such as maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding heavy lifting when possible, and treating chronic coughing or constipation.

Sérv repair generally provides good outcomes, though recurrence can occur.
