Suunistel is a Finnish term used to describe orienteering, the activity of navigating terrain with a map and, in most cases, a compass to visit a sequence of control points. Participants choose routes, interpret terrain features, and make route choices to complete courses as quickly as possible or within a given distance. A typical event includes running or walking through forests or urban areas, locating controls (rastit) marked on the map, and recording visits with a punch or electronic timing system. Common formats vary in length and technical difficulty, and courses are designed for different skill levels.

Core elements of suunistel are map reading, terrain interpretation, and decision making. A detailed topographic map (kartta) is used, with control points and their codes shown on a control description sheet. Equipment usually includes suitable footwear and clothing, a map case, and a compass in some formats. Safety considerations emphasize staying within marked areas, keeping a pace appropriate to the terrain, and following event rules and local guidelines.

Historically, orienteering emerged in the Nordic countries in the early 20th century and grew into an international sport. The International Orienteering Federation (IOF) was founded in 1961, and the first World Orienteering Championships were held in 1966 in Finland. In Finland, suunistel is supported by local clubs and the national federation, Suomen Suunnistusliitto, which promotes training, events, youth programs, and competition at multiple levels. In addition to standard foot orienteering, related formats such as trail orienteering and ski orienteering exist to broaden participation.
