Solusyövissä, often referred to as cellular carcinoma, is a broad term describing a type of cancer that originates in the epithelial cells of the skin. Epithelial cells form the outer protective layer of the skin and also line many internal organs and cavities. When these cells undergo uncontrolled growth and division, they can form tumors. Solusyövissä can manifest in various forms, with the most common being basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Basal cell carcinoma arises from the basal cells, which are located in the deepest layer of the epidermis. These tumors typically appear as pearly or waxy bumps, flat flesh-colored or brown scar-like lesions, or sores that bleed and scab over. They are the most common type of skin cancer and are generally slow-growing and rarely spread to other parts of the body.

Squamous cell carcinoma originates in the squamous cells, which are flat cells found in the upper layers of the epidermis. These cancers often present as firm, red nodules, scaly flat patches, or sores that may crust over or bleed. While also common, squamous cell carcinoma has a higher potential to invade deeper tissues or metastasize than basal cell carcinoma, though this is still relatively uncommon.

Other less common forms of solusyövissä exist, including Merkel cell carcinoma, which is a rare and aggressive type of skin cancer. Risk factors for developing solusyövissä include prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds, fair skin, a history of sunburns, weakened immune systems, and exposure to certain chemicals. Early detection and treatment are crucial for a favorable prognosis.
