Softcoat, sometimes written as soft-coat or SoftCoat, is a generic term for a class of soft, flexible protective coatings applied to surfaces to improve durability, reduce wear, or tailor surface interactions. It denotes a family of polymer films whose modulus and hardness are lower than that of the substrate, allowing the coating to deform without cracking.

Materials used in softcoats include acrylics, silicones, polyurethanes, epoxy blends, and fluoropolymers. They can be transparent or pigmented and may be engineered for properties such as anti-scratch, anti-fog, UV resistance, chemical resistance, or electrical insulation. Coatings are applied by dip coating, spin coating, spray, or roll-to-roll processes and cured thermally or with UV or electron-beam exposure.

Softcoats are typically characterized by low modulus, high elongation, and good adhesion. When optically clear, they provide transparency suitable for displays and lenses. Performance depends on substrate compatibility and environmental exposure; softcoats may experience creep, solvent sensitivity, or yellowing over time.

Applications span several industries. In electronics, softcoats serve as conformal coatings to insulate and protect printed circuit boards. In optics and displays, they offer protective layers with controlled surface roughness and specialized properties such as anti-fog or anti-reflective behavior. In consumer electronics, automotive, and medical devices, softcoats protect surfaces from scratches and wear while preserving tactile feel and aesthetics.
