Antireflective, in optics, refers to surfaces or coatings designed to minimize reflection at an interface between two media, typically air and a solid such as glass or polymer. By reducing reflections, AR treatments improve transmission, contrast, and color fidelity in optical devices and measurements.

The underlying principle is thin-film interference. A single quarter-wavelength layer with an appropriate refractive index can cancel reflections at a chosen wavelength. Broader performance is achieved with multiple dielectric layers of alternating indices, a graded-index coating, or nanostructured textures that gradually change the effective refractive index. These approaches reduce reflectance over wider spectral ranges and varying angles of incidence.

Types of AR coatings include single-layer dielectric coatings, multi-layer dielectric stacks, gradient-index coatings, and nanostructured or “moth-eye” surfaces. Selection depends on the substrate, operating wavelengths, and required durability. Common low-index materials such as magnesium fluoride (MgF2) and silicon dioxide (SiO2) are used with higher-index layers like titanium dioxide (TiO2) or tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) to tailor performance.

Applications span eyeglasses, camera and microscope lenses, displays, solar panels, optical sensors, and fiber-optic components. AR coatings are important for maximizing transmission, reducing glare, and improving image quality and efficiency in devices exposed to light from many directions.

Performance and durability considerations include wavelength and angle dependence, environmental resistance, abrasion, cost, and ease of integration with various substrates. Manufacturing methods range from physical vapor deposition and sputtering to chemical vapor deposition and polymer-based coatings, chosen to match performance goals and production requirements.
