Sociopathic is a nonclinical term commonly used to describe a pattern of antisocial behavior and personality traits characterized by disregard for the rights of others. In modern psychiatry the closest formal diagnosis is antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), listed in the DSM-5 and ICD-11. The term sociopathy is therefore a lay or criminological label rather than a specific diagnosis, and its boundaries with related terms such as psychopathy are debated. Some sources distinguish sociopathy as arising largely from social and environmental factors, while psychopathy emphasizes affective and interpersonal traits; but these distinctions are not consistently applied in clinical practice.
