Smørepast is a term used in Scandinavian languages to describe an open-faced sandwich, closely related to the Danish smørrebrød. The dish consists of a single slice of bread, usually a dark rye bread (rugbrød) brushed with butter, with toppings laid on top. The base is hearty and sturdy to support multiple toppings without becoming soggy.

Toppings vary widely and are chosen to create balanced flavor combinations, often with a decorative arrangement.
