Slimecaps are mycorrhizal fungi, forming symbiotic relationships with tree roots, particularly those of oaks, pines, and other hardwoods. This association helps both the fungus and the host tree by enhancing nutrient exchange. While some species are edible, many slimecaps are considered inedible or even toxic, particularly when raw. Cooking can improve digestibility, but identification is crucial due to the risk of poisoning. Lookalikes, such as the deadly *Amanita phalloides* (death cap), can be dangerous if mistaken for edible varieties.

Slimecaps thrive in moist, shaded environments and are often found in clusters or rings (fairy rings) on forest floors. Their slimy texture is due to a layer of mucus secreted by the cap, which helps retain moisture and may deter predators. Some species exhibit bioluminescence, glowing faintly in the dark, a trait that remains poorly understood but may aid in spore dispersal or communication.

In folklore and popular culture, slimecaps have occasionally been associated with supernatural beliefs, though no scientific evidence supports such claims. Their ecological role as decomposers and mycorrhizal partners underscores their importance in forest ecosystems.
