Mushrooms are the fleshy fruiting bodies of certain fungi, typically produced on the surface of soil, wood, or other substrates. They range widely in size, shape, and color and are found in most climates. Edible forms are cultivated commercially and consumed widely, and some species have medicinal properties; many wild species are toxic.

A mushroom consists of a cap, gills or pores, a stalk, and often a veil or ring. The cap protects the spore-bearing tissues; beneath the cap, gills or pores produce spores. The root-like network is mycelium, which grows as hyphae through the substrate. Reproduction occurs when spores are released and dispersed; they germinate to form new mycelium, completing the cycle.

Ecologically, mushrooms perform saprotrophic, mycorrhizal, or parasitic roles. Saprotrophic species decompose dead organic matter, recycling nutrients. Mycorrhizal species form symbiotic associations with plant roots, aiding water and nutrient uptake. They contribute to soil structure and nutrient cycles.

Humans use mushrooms for food, medicine, and research. Common edible cultivated species include Agaricus bisporus (button mushroom), Pleurotus ostreatus (oyster), and Lentinula edodes (shiitake). Some species contain bioactive compounds with potential health benefits. Cultivation requires controlled temperature, humidity, and substrate preparation to prevent contamination.

Caution is advised with wild mushrooms, as many species are poisonous or resemble edible ones. If foraging, consult experts and use reliable field guides. Conservation efforts focus on preserving forests and woodlands to support fungal biodiversity.
