Skaitomumo refers to the readability of a text—the ease with which a reader can read and understand it. In practice, skaitomumo encompasses language features such as sentence length, syntax, vocabulary, and morphology, as well as typographic and layout factors, and it also depends on the reader’s background, education, and familiarity with the topic.

Measurements of skaitomumo often rely on quantitative formulas that estimate text difficulty from observable features like average sentence length, word length or syllable count, and word frequency. Internationally, formulas such as Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level have been developed and adapted to many languages; in Lithuanian research, language-specific indexes are sometimes used. These scores approximate readability demand rather than guarantee comprehension, which also depends on topic knowledge, context, and motivation.

Several factors influence skaitomumo. In languages with rich morphology, such as Lithuanian, morphological complexity and inflection can affect perceived difficulty. Other factors include punctuation, paragraph structure, and on-screen presentation (line length, font choice, line spacing). Digital media emphasize accessible design, including clear headings, concise paragraphs, bullet lists, and sufficient contrast, all of which can enhance skaitomumo.

Applications of skaitomumo analysis appear in education, publishing, and digital media. It informs writing and revision, content creation strategies, and web accessibility. Practical steps to improve readability include using shorter sentences, choosing familiar vocabulary where appropriate, defining technical terms, employing active voice, and testing texts with representative readers to ensure clarity.

Limitations exist: readability scores do not capture all aspects of understanding, such as prior knowledge, conceptual difficulty, or visual layout nuances. Therefore, skaitomumo should be considered alongside other usability and comprehension assessments.
