A shipbuilder is an individual or company involved in the design, construction, and maintenance of ships and boats. Shipbuilders operate primarily in shipyards and may participate in a vessel’s life cycle from concept and design through construction, testing, commissioning, and, in some cases, after-sales support.

The construction process typically begins with naval architecture and marine engineering to determine hull form, stability, propulsion, and capacity. Detailed design and procurement follow, with blocks of the hull built separately and then joined in a dry dock or slipway. Fabrication uses steel or aluminum plates, welding and riveting, followed by outfitting—installing engines, propulsion, electrical systems, piping, and interior accommodations. Vessels undergo sea trials and performance verification before delivery.

Shipbuilding relies on specialized equipment such as dry docks, floating docks, cranes, and machine shops. Modern yards use computer-aided design, digital manufacturing, modular construction, and, in some cases, robotics. Materials commonly include steel, aluminum, and increasingly composites for select vessel types.

The industry is regulated by classification societies and international standards. Classification societies establish construction and safety rules, while engineers ensure compliance with SOLAS, MARPOL, and related conventions. Yard workers include welders, fitters, electricians, pipefitters, painters, and crane operators; training and safety are essential.

Global shipbuilding is concentrated in East Asia, with notable yards in China, South Korea, and Japan, along with activity in Europe and other regions. Market trends include larger vessels, higher automation, and lifecycle services such as maintenance and repair. The shipbuilder creates the vessels that support commercial, naval, and recreational maritime activities.
