Settere is the Italian term for the group of setter dogs, a family of athletic gun dogs used for locating game birds. In Italian usage, settere refers to the various setter breeds collectively rather than to a single breed. The main varieties commonly included are the English Setter, the Irish Setter, and the Gordon Setter. Collectively, setters are known for their endurance, affectionate temperament, and distinct hunting style.

Historically, setters developed in Britain and Ireland from the 16th to the 19th centuries as working dogs for bird hunting. They are trained to locate game by sight and scent and to indicate its location by “setting”—a crouched, stationary pose that signals the hunter. This waiting stance helps the hunter flush and retrieve game.

Physical characteristics vary among the breeds but share a lightly built, agile frame and a dense, often long coat. English Setters are typically white with black and/or tan markings; Irish Setters are known for their rich red coats; Gordon Setters are usually black and tan. All setters are moderately tall, with strong noses, keen vision, and a stamina suited to long days afield. Temperaments tend to be friendly, trainable, and good with families when properly socialized, though they require regular exercise and intellectual stimulation.

Care involves regular brushing to manage coat maintenance, especially for the longer varieties, and routine veterinary care to monitor hip health and eye conditions common in larger breeds. Setters benefit from consistent training and early socialization, as well as opportunities to work or participate in dog sports.
