Schron is a Polish noun meaning a shelter or protective structure designed to shield people from danger, especially during military action or severe weather. It is typically used for underground or semi-underground enclosures and is common in civil defense and architectural terminology. The term is distinct from schronisko, which refers to a shelter or hostel for people or animals, and from schronienie, the act or state of sheltering.

Typical types include schron przeciwlotniczy (air-raid shelter), schron bojowy (combat shelter), and general underground shelters integrated into buildings, factories, or railway stations. These structures are designed to protect occupants from blast, shrapnel, and toxic environments, and may be equipped with ventilation, blast walls, air filtration, and basic supplies.

Construction and design: schrony are usually built of reinforced concrete or earth-leaning structures, often subterranean or partially buried. They feature access points such as hatches or stairwells, reinforced doors, ventilation ducts, and, in larger facilities, emergency lighting and communication systems. The internal layout prioritizes rapid evacuation, with designated spaces for seating, storage, and air-handling equipment.

Historical context: many Polish towns and buildings were equipped with schrony in the interwar period and during World War II as part of civil defense. During the Cold War, additional shelters were added or upgraded. Following the fall of communism, some were decommissioned, others repurposed as storage or museums, and a number remain preserved as historical monuments or for civil defense demonstrations.
