An air raid is a bombing operation carried out by aircraft against targets on the ground, typically during armed conflict. Air raids have been used to destroy military installations, infrastructure, and urban centers, and to intimidate civilian populations. The term often implies coordination with warnings and protective measures for noncombatants.

Historically, air raids became a defining feature of modern warfare. In World War II, the German Luftwaffe’s Blitz against Britain in 1940–41 brought civilian bombing to unprecedented scale, while Allied air forces attacked German industry and transportation.
