Schimpanser is the Swedish plural for chimpanzees, referring to members of the genus Pan, primarily the common chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) and closely related bonobo (Pan paniscus). They are great apes native to central and West Africa, occupying a range of habitats from tropical forests to woodlands and savanna mosaics.

Schimpanser live in complex social groups characterized by a fission–fusion organization, where party composition changes over time. Social bonds, dominance hierarchies, and alliances are important in group dynamics. Communication uses vocalizations, facial expressions, gestures and body postures; they also exhibit cultural variation in behavior between communities.

They are omnivorous, with diets that include fruits, leaves, seeds, insects and occasional vertebrate prey. Schimpanser are notable for their cognitive abilities: they use and fashion tools for foraging and other tasks, demonstrate problem-solving skills, and show elements of learning and social transmission.

Lifespan in the wild is typically several decades, and longer in captivity. Reproduction is slow, with long intervals between births, which contributes to vulnerability to population decline.

Conservation status varies by species and region but is generally precarious. Threats include habitat destruction, hunting for bushmeat, disease, and illegal trade. Conservation measures include protected areas, anti-poaching efforts, habitat restoration and community-based programs. Research on schimpanser continues to inform primatology, conservation biology and understanding of human evolution.
