Remanufacturing is a process that restores used or worn products to at least original performance, safety, and reliability, often matching or exceeding the specifications of a newly manufactured item. It is distinct from repair, refurbishment, and recycling. In remanufacturing, a product is taken into a controlled factory setting, disassembled into modules, and subjected to rigorous inspection and testing. Worn or obsolete components are replaced with new or refurbished parts, tolerances are brought back to original specifications, surfaces are cleaned or treated, and the unit is reassembled and subjected to functional and safety testing. The resulting remanufactured product typically carries a warranty and is intended to perform like new for a defined period.

Common remanufacturing industries include automotive parts (engines, transmissions, electronic control units), heavy equipment and industrial machinery, information technology hardware, aerospace components, and medical devices. The process often begins with a "core" from a customer or a take-back program, followed by assessment to determine eligibility and required intervention, then disassembly, refurbishment, replacement of components, reassembly, re-testing, and finally repackaging and distribution.

Benefits include reduced energy and material use, lower environmental impact, longer asset life, and the creation of value through service-based business models. Challenges include variability in the quality of returned cores, logistics and inventory management, upfront process costs, warranty risk, and competition from new products.

Standards and indicators commonly used in remanufacturing include quality management systems (for example ISO 9001) and environmental management standards (for example ISO 14001). Remanufacturing supports circular economy strategies by extending product lifecycles and reducing waste.
