ISO 14001 is an international standard for environmental management systems (EMS). It provides a framework that organizations can use to establish, implement, maintain, and continually improve an EMS with the aim of reducing environmental impact, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and achieving stated environmental objectives. The standard is part of the ISO 14000 family and is widely adopted across industries and sizes.

The current widely adopted version is ISO 14001:2015. It adopts the high-level structure used by other ISO management system standards (Annex SL) and emphasizes a Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle. The standard outlines requirements across several core areas: leadership and commitment, context of the organization, planning (including environmental policy, objectives, and life cycle thinking), support (resources, competence, awareness, communication, and documented information), operation (controls and process management, including emergency preparedness and response), performance evaluation (monitoring, measurement, analysis, internal audits, and management review), and continual improvement.

Certification to ISO 14001 is voluntary and typically carried out by independent, accredited bodies. Achieving certification demonstrates conformity with the standard, but it does not guarantee specific environmental performance; ongoing compliance and continual improvement are required to maintain certification.

Benefits commonly cited for adopting ISO 14001 include improved regulatory compliance, reduced waste and emissions, increased resource efficiency and cost savings, enhanced risk management, and greater trust among stakeholders. The standard is compatible with other management standards such as ISO 9001 (quality) and ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety).
