A rektoskoop, also known as a rectoscope or proctoscope, is a medical instrument used for the visual examination of the rectum. It is a rigid or flexible tube, typically made of metal or plastic, with a light source at the end. The rektoskoop is inserted into the anus and advanced into the rectum, allowing the physician to visualize the lining of the rectal canal.

The procedure is usually performed to diagnose and evaluate conditions affecting the rectum, such as hemorrhoids, anal fissures, polyps, tumors, or inflammation. It can also be used to obtain tissue samples (biopsies) for further analysis or to perform minor surgical procedures, such as the removal of small polyps.

Before a rektoskoop examination, the patient may be asked to empty their bowels. The procedure is generally performed with the patient lying on their side with their knees drawn up towards their chest, or in a knee-chest position. A lubricant is applied to the rektoskoop to facilitate insertion and minimize discomfort. The examination is typically brief, lasting only a few minutes.

While generally safe, potential risks include minor bleeding or perforation of the rectal wall, though these are rare. The rektoskoop is an essential tool in gastroenterology and proctology, aiding in the diagnosis and management of various rectal disorders.
