Rekentabellen are reference tables used in arithmetic to provide ready-made results of basic operations for a range of numbers. They support mental calculation, number sense, and quick checks during learning and practice. In most contexts, rekentabellen refers to addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division tables. A typical table is arranged as a grid: one axis lists the left-hand operand, the top axis lists the right-hand operand, and each cell shows the result of the operation. Commonly used ranges include 1–10, 1–12, or 1–100, with multiplication tables (tafel) being especially common in Dutch schools. There are also decimal or fraction tables and tables for other operations.

Rekentabellen are used as printed posters, worksheets, or laminated cards, and in digital form on computers and tablets. They are often introduced in early primary education to build familiarity with patterns, multiples, and factors, and to speed up arithmetic without calculators. Over time, their role has shifted as students also learn mental math strategies and gain access to calculators and software; rekentabellen are now typically used as a supplementary reference rather than a sole method of computation.

Today, modern rekentabellen can be interactive or customizable, allowing users to choose ranges, switch between operations, or scramble values for practice. Some tables include visual cues (color coding, grids) to highlight patterns such as multiples, symmetry, and the distributive property.
