Rechtermarges are the spaces on the right side of a page between the content area and the edge of the page in left-to-right text. The term is used in typography and layout to describe the quiet negative space that helps define a page’s visual balance and readability.

In printed materials, rechtermarges serve several practical purposes. They protect text from being cut during trimming, provide room for binding or clipping, and give the reader a comfortable margin that reduces eye fatigue. The width of the right margin can influence the perceived structure of a page; too narrow a margin can make lines feel cramped, while too wide a margin can waste space and disrupt flow. Design choices about the rechtermarge are often paired with the left margin, bottom margin, and the overall page size to achieve a harmonious composition. The inner margin near the binding is called the gutter and is related but distinct from the rechtermarge.

In practice, typical right margins vary by medium and purpose. For standard print documents, right margins commonly range from about 15 to 25 millimeters on ordinary page sizes, with adjustments for aesthetics, readability, or binding requirements. In digital design, the conceptual equivalent is the CSS margin-right property (or padding-right in some layouts), which controls spacing between elements and their containing block and adapts to screen size and writing direction.

Rechtermarges, together with other margins, play a key role in legibility, aesthetics, and the practical constraints of printing and display.
