Random copolymers are polymers in which two different monomer species are incorporated along the same chain in a largely stochastic sequence. They are distinct from homopolymers, which consist of a single repeating unit, and from block or alternating copolymers, where monomer units occur in extended blocks or in a regular alternation. In a random copolymer, the arrangement of monomer units along the chain resembles a random pattern governed by the polymerization kinetics.

Synthesis and sequence distribution are determined during copolymerization of monomers A and B, using methods such as free radical, ionic, or coordination polymerization. The microstructure is described by reactivity ratios rA and rB and by models like the Mayo-Lewis equation. If the monomer reactivities are near unity and the feed ratio is balanced, the dyad distribution approaches a random (Bernoulli) distribution. More extreme reactivity ratios can lead to gradient effects, short blocks, or enhanced clustering of one monomer.

The properties of random copolymers depend on composition and the degree of randomness. Randomizing the sequence generally disrupts regular packing, reducing crystallinity and often lowering or broadening the glass transition temperature, while tuning solubility, toughness, and processability. By varying the monomer mix, designers tailor properties for specific applications, such as improved compatibility in polymer blends or modified mechanical performance.

Applications include packaging resins and coatings, compatibilizers for immiscible blends, impact modifiers, and soft elastomeric materials. Characterization commonly uses NMR to estimate dyad and triad sequences, DSC for thermal transitions, and GPC for molecular weight distribution. The concept can be analyzed with statistical or Markov models to predict monomer sequences and resulting property profiles.
