Précontraint is a French term that translates to "prestressed" in English, primarily used in civil engineering and material science. It refers to the intentional introduction of stresses into a material or structure to counteract the stresses that will be induced by external loads during its service life. This pre-stressing is achieved by applying forces before the structure is subjected to its operational loads.

In the context of concrete structures, précontraint is most commonly applied to concrete beams, slabs, and other structural elements. This is typically done by using high-strength steel tendons or wires that are tensioned and then anchored against the concrete. Once the external loads are applied, the pre-existing compressive stresses in the concrete are reduced, but the concrete generally remains in compression, preventing or significantly reducing tensile cracking. This leads to stronger, more durable, and often more slender structures compared to conventionally reinforced concrete.

The concept of précontraint is also relevant in materials science, particularly when discussing the mechanical properties of certain materials or composite structures where internal stresses are deliberately engineered. The goal is always to improve performance, enhance load-bearing capacity, or extend the service life of the component or structure by managing the stress distribution within it. Different methods exist for introducing pre-stress, including pre-tensioning (tensioning tendons before concrete hardening) and post-tensioning (tensioning tendons after concrete has hardened).
