Procesvaten, in English often referred to as process vessels or process tanks, are industrial containers used to hold, mix, heat, cool, or chemically react process streams as part of manufacturing operations. They range from simple storage tanks to complex reactors and fermenters and are found across the chemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and water treatment sectors. The Dutch term procesvaten is commonly used in Dutch-speaking contexts, while English literature typically distinguishes vessels by function (process vessel, reactor, fermenter, storage tank).

Design and construction are driven by the intended use, operating conditions, and required cleanliness. Common features include a cylindrical body with end shapes that can be hemispherical or dished, and connections for inlets, outlets, sampling, instrumentation, and safety devices. Materials are chosen for corrosion resistance and hygiene, with stainless steels such as 304 or 316los the most prevalent in many industries; some vessels use lined or coated interiors for specialized corrosion protection. Additional options include heating or cooling jackets, internal coils, agitators or mixers, baffles, insulation, and ports for cleaning, inspection, and automation.

Standards and safety are important considerations. Design and fabrication often follow codes such as ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code or European PED, along with industry-specific requirements for hygiene (e.g., 3A, FDA guidelines) or sanitary design. Vessels may be designed for stationary storage, or for pressurized or vacuum operation, and require appropriate relief systems, venting, temperature and level controls, and safe access.

Applications and varieties vary by function. Fermenters and bioreactors support biological processes; reactors enable chemical reactions; storage tanks hold liquids or slurries; mixing tanks facilitate blending. Proper maintenance, inspection, and cleaning regimes are essential to ensure performance and safety over the vessel’s lifecycle.
