Processkärl, or process vessels, are containers used in industrial processing to hold, treat, or transform liquids and slurries as part of a production process. They encompass a range of equipment such as reactors, storage tanks, mixing vessels, fermentation tanks, and separators. Processkärl are designed to withstand the mechanical, thermal, and chemical demands of the process, and may operate at atmospheric pressure or under elevated pressures and/or temperatures.

Common features and configurations include agitation systems (impellers and baffles) for mixing, heating or cooling jackets or internal coils for temperature control, and insulation to minimize heat loss. Cleaning and sterilization capabilities are often integrated through clean-in-place (CIP) and sterilize-in-place (SIP) systems, especially in food, pharmaceutical, and biotech industries. Vessels may be equipped with inlet and outlet connections, sampling ports, level and pressure sensors, and safety devices such as relief valves or rupture discs.

Materials of construction are selected for corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and compatibility with contents, with stainless steels and alloys like nickel-based materials common in harsher service. Design and fabrication follow applicable standards and directives, such as the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) or EN 13445 for pressure vessels, and the Pressure Equipment Directive (EU PED); sanitary design standards (3A, EHEDG) are often applied in food and pharmaceutical settings.

Processkärl play a central role in chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and water treatment facilities. Their reliability, hygiene, and safety are maintained through careful design, ongoing maintenance, inspections, and proper operation within certified control systems.
