Prefrontallimbic refers to the functional and structural interactions between regions of the prefrontal cortex and the limbic system in the brain. The concept describes neural circuits that integrate higher-order cognition with emotion and motivation, enabling regulation of affect, decision making, and behavior across social and environmental contexts.

Anatomy and connections: The prefrontal cortex includes regions such as the dorsolateral (DLPFC), ventromedial (vmPFC), and orbitofrontal (OFC) cortices, while the limbic system comprises structures like the amygdala, hippocampus, anterior cingulate cortex, nucleus accumbens, and insula. These areas are densely interconnected, forming bidirectional pathways in which the PFC exerts top-down control over limbic activity, and limbic regions provide affective signals and memory information to the PFC.

Functions and dynamics: Prefrontallimbic circuits underlie emotion regulation, fear and threat processing, reward learning, and decision making under uncertainty. Experimental studies and comparative research across species continue to refine understanding of how these networks support adaptive behavior.
