Preadolescence is the developmental period between childhood and adolescence. Academic tasks increasingly require sustained attention and independence, with growing expectations for responsibility at school and home.

Friends and social networks become more influential, while family dynamics evolve as children seek greater independence. Mood fluctuations and sensitivity to social feedback are common, influenced by hormonal changes, stress, sleep patterns, and environmental factors.

Health, well-being, and education: supporting healthy development involves adequate sleep, physical activity, balanced nutrition, and puberty education. Schools may address social-emotional learning, anti-bullying, and digital citizenship. Because terminology and age ranges differ among experts and cultures, the exact definition of preadolescence is not universal.
