Plantwaterbehoefte is the amount of water a plant needs to meet its water losses through evapotranspiration and to maintain turgor and healthy growth. It varies with species, plant size, rooting depth and growth stage, and is strongly influenced by the environment, particularly heat, light and air humidity. In practical terms, it is the daily or seasonal demand that irrigation aims to satisfy.

Several factors determine plantwaterbehoefte. Climate affects evaporation and transpiration; soils differ in water-holding capacity and drainage; root system size determines access to moisture; and crop type and growth stage determine leaf area and stomatal conductance.
