Waterholding, or water-holding capacity, refers to the ability of a material or system to retain water under specified conditions. It is commonly expressed as a measure of water content per unit mass or volume, or as a percentage of water relative to the dry material. The concept is used across soils, construction materials, textiles, and various porous media.

Waterholding results from several mechanisms. Water can be physically held in pore spaces (capillary water), or chemically bound to surfaces (adsorbed or bound water) within the material’s matrix. The balance between these forms depends on factors such as porosity, pore size distribution, texture or composition, surface chemistry, and temperature. In soils, texture (sand, silt, clay) and organic matter strongly influence holding capacity, and the relationship is described by the water retention curve, which relates water content to matric potential.

Key terms in soil contexts include field capacity, the amount of water remaining after drainage by gravity, and the wilting point, the moisture level at which plants cease to recover from wilting. Together, these describe the usable water reservoir in the soil. In other materials, waterholding affects moisture buffering, durability, and performance. For example, building materials may moderate indoor humidity, textiles and polymers may retain moisture for comfort or functionality, and hydrogels or absorbent fibers are designed to maximize waterholding for specific applications.

Waterholding is an important consideration in irrigation planning, material design, and product performance, reflecting how a system stores and releases water under real-world conditions.
