Piriformisz-szindróma is a condition characterized by pain in the buttock and leg, often mimicking sciatica. It occurs when the piriformis muscle, located deep in the buttock, becomes tight or spasms and irritates or compresses the sciatic nerve, which runs alongside or through it. The exact cause of piriformisz-szindróma is not always clear but can be related to overuse, injury, prolonged sitting, or anatomical variations.

Symptoms typically include a deep aching pain in the buttock, which can radiate down the back of the thigh and sometimes into the calf and foot. This pain is often exacerbated by sitting, climbing stairs, or activities that involve flexing the hip. Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg can also occur. Diagnosis is usually based on a physical examination and the patient's reported symptoms, as there is no single definitive diagnostic test. Imaging studies like MRI or ultrasound may be used to rule out other conditions.

Treatment for piriformisz-szindróma focuses on relieving pressure on the sciatic nerve. This commonly involves conservative measures such as rest, stretching and strengthening exercises for the piriformis muscle, physical therapy, and pain management with anti-inflammatory medications or muscle relaxants. In some cases, injections of corticosteroids or botulinum toxin into the piriformis muscle may provide relief. For persistent or severe symptoms, surgical intervention to release the piriformis muscle from the sciatic nerve might be considered.
