Pienpoltto refers to the practice of burning fuels in devices designed for small-scale heat or power production, typically at the domestic or small-facility level. In Finland and other Nordic countries the term is commonly associated with residential heating using solid fuels such as wood or pellets, but it can also apply to peat or coal in some contexts. Pienpoltto devices include wood stoves, pellet stoves, small biomass boilers, fireplaces, and other compact combustion units. Modern small-stove technology often combines automatic fuel feeding (in pellet devices) with controlled combustion and heat storage or distribution.

Efficiency and emissions vary widely. Modern pellet and wood stoves can achieve relatively high thermal efficiency, while older or poorly operated units may produce substantial particulate matter and carbon monoxide. Emissions depend on fuel quality, moisture content, burn rate, and stove design. Properly sized and installed devices with good maintenance and dry fuel reduce pollutants.

Regulatory regimes in many countries set performance and installation standards for new small-fuel appliances, with additional rules governing chimney safety and fuel use. In the European Union, ecodesign requirements aim to limit emissions from new solid-fuel stoves. Health and safety considerations include the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, fire hazards, and chimney creosote buildup; these risks are mitigated by professional installation, regular chimney cleaning, and CO detectors.

Pienpoltto remains a common option for supplementary heating, energy resilience, or in areas with limited access to centralized heating grids. It is increasingly supported by guidelines emphasizing efficient combustion, clean fuels, and proper maintenance.
