Peranakan is a term used to describe the descendants of Chinese migrants who settled in the Malay Archipelago, especially in the Straits Settlements of Penang, Malacca, and Singapore, as well as in parts of Indonesia. The word peranakan means local-born in Malay. The community formed through centuries of intermarriage and cultural exchange between Chinese settlers and local Malays and Indonesians, resulting in a distinct hybrid culture often referred to as Baba-Nyonya among Straits Chinese.
